Parthenope: film plot
Paolo Sorrentino's new film recounts the long life journey of Parthenope , a woman who shares her name with her city, Naples , and the Siren Parthenope who, according to myth, founded it. From 1950 to the present day, in two different eras, the film explores the vast repertoire of existence. From carefree youth to the inexorable changes of beauty, from the lack of communication between people to forbidden and impossible loves, from the vertigo of love at first sight to romantic kisses on Capri nights, passing through flashes of extreme happiness and pain.
Parthenope is a woman captivated by the unpredictability of love who learns to be free through an introspective journey, where she learns that fragility can be a strength and that it is the brevity of life that makes it so memorable.
“ Parthenope is the enchanted gaze of the world. ”
Paolo Sorrentino
Alongside her stand the other Neapolitans, men and women seduced by their melancholic tendencies, their resignation, and their tragic ironies. Accompanying the protagonists' adventures and marking their every step is time, an ever-faithful companion, and a beautiful yet lost Naples. A city that bewitches, enchants, laughs, screams, and wounds, as only it in the world can.
Parthenope, Naples and the myth of the siren
Sorrentino's new film , Parthenope , evokes the myth of the siren Parthenope , traditionally considered the founder of Naples . Her name has Greek origins and means " virgin ," and various legends tell that the siren founded Naples out of love.
The best-known myth is that of Parthenope and Ulysses , recounted in the Odyssey : the siren, in love with the hero, tries to charm him with her song, but fails. Desperate, she throws herself into the sea, and her body, carried by the waves to the Gulf of Naples, washes up on the islet of Megaride, where it dissolves among the rocks. Legend has it that the siren's face transformed into the hill of Capodimonte, while her tail transformed into that of Posillipo. Since then, the capital of Campania has also been known as the city of Naples , and the siren has been its symbol for all its inhabitants.

Another version of the myth, told by Matilde Serao, sees Parthenope as a Greek girl in love with the hero Cimon, despite her father's opposition, who intended to marry her off to another man. They fled Greece together to Italy and settled in the Gulf of Naples, where Parthenope gave birth to twelve children, becoming the symbolic mother of the Neapolitans.

Parthenope: Paolo Sorrentino's Film Between Naples and Love
Paolo Sorrentino's Parthenope intertwines its plot with the soul of Naples, exploring it through a lens that captures its mysterious and indefinable essence. The protagonist symbolically represents the city, experiencing it with a natural seductiveness that creates turmoil, passion, and confusion in the emotions of those who allow themselves to be drawn into her.
The film reflects the regrets of a city perpetually balanced in its contrasts, which is told without veils by the protagonist, who lives between the dark alleys and the bright beaches of Posillipo.
“ If The Great Beauty recalled La Dolce Vita, Parthenope is an Amarcord full of regrets towards a city confused between the irrelevant and the decisive. ”
