A Brief History of the Alpine Ski World Championships

The Alpine World Ski Championships , or Alpine World Ski Championships , represent one of the most prestigious events in the winter sports panorama and are organized by the International Ski Federation ( FIS ), every two years. Born in 1931 with the first edition in Mürren , they were initially held annually until 1939, but were suspended during the Second World War.

Resumed in 1948, they took place every two years, with the peculiarity that until 1980 the Alpine skiing Olympic titles were also valid as world titles. Since 1985, to avoid overlaps with the Olympic Games, the Alpine Skiing World Championships have been held in odd-numbered years, with the sole exception of 1996, when the Championships scheduled in Sierra Nevada were postponed by a year due to lack of snow.

Now, the wait is all for Saalbach 2025 !

What are the disciplines in the Alpine Ski World Championships?

The Alpine Ski World Championships competition system includes training events for the speed events, qualifications for lower-ranked athletes in the technical disciplines, and two-run finals for the Slalom and Giant Slalom . Gold, silver, and bronze medals are awarded to the top three in each discipline, with no points classification by nation.

The athletes are selected by the National Federations based on the World Cup results and internal qualifications and are called to compete in different disciplines, divided into men's and women's categories:

  1. Downhill : the fastest race, characterised by steep descents and long courses, with speeds exceeding 130 km/h;
  2. Super-G (Super-G) : a combination of the speed of downhill and the technique of giant slalom, with wide curves and fast passages;
  3. Giant Slalom : technical race with gates more spaced than the special slalom, which requires precision and control;
  4. Special Slalom : the most technical discipline, with tight curves and fast passages between very close gates;
  5. Combined (DH/SL) : sum of the times of a downhill or super-G race and a special slalom, which rewards the most complete skiers;
  6. Team Event : A single-elimination race in which mixed teams of men and women compete on parallel tracks.

The motto of this year's edition remains unchanged: 1 mountain, 11 races, one goal !
